May Newsletter 2018

As I currently type this update we are in the middle of The Ojai Tennis Tournament. All things are looking great and hope that this year's tournament is a smashing success! May is always the month for parents (like myself) to start looking for Summer activities. Here at OVAC we will have awesome Swim and Tennis Camps throughout the Summer! For the first time, we will be having an all-day camp focusing on both Tennis and Swim. We will have two sessions and should be a blast. We have a sign-up poster located in the lobby. We will also be hosting a fun wine tasting event, May 25th with the amazing Bob Huey. His last event was great with many members trying out his amazing wines. We will have more details later in the month. I hope everyone has a great May!

See Ya at the Club!

MAY’S SWIM DRILL-BACKSTROKE CATCH-UP

imgMany of us know one of the most common freestyle drills, Catch-up stroke, forcing freestylers to overlap their stroke by touching each hand before releasing your arm into the under-water power phase of the stroke. Catch helps us be aware of what our body is doing and slows down stroke parts for more mindful freestyle. Catch-up can also be performed with backstroke! To do back stroke Catch-up let your arms catch-up at the top of the recovery, out of the water right above your chest. You may feel like you might start to sink, but just like in freestyle Catch-up, you will be slowed down and forced to have a stronger kick, always a benefit to any stroke!

FITNESS NEWS

WHAT’S THE SCOOP WITH PROCESSED FOODS?

-Danielle Wommack, Fitness Director

We’ve all heard that we should avoid processed foods, but why? They are everywhere in the grocery store, at the gas station and in vending machines and so convenient. Not to mention heavily promoted and advertised. We don’t have to raise, harvest, process and make all of our food from scratch like our ancestors thanks to all this convenience. But, it comes at a price.

Processed foods don’t add value to our body or our health. Most processed foods are high in calories with very minimal nutritional value. They are usually high in sugar, salt, artificial color, preservatives and/or industrially processed fats. They are designed in a chemist’s lab to make you over-eat them and still want more. You find it difficult to know when you are truly hungry or full.

In our country, processed foods make up over 50-75% of our intake. Yes you read that correctly - most people eat food that is mostly highly processed. And what is the result? People who eat a lot of processed foods generally will have trouble regulating their appetite, will be poorly nourished, will have metabolic health issues, and/or will have carry more body fat.

So what can you do about it? Fill up on the “food stuff” so there’s less room for the junk food (i.e., processed foods). For example, commit to having a piece of fruit before reaching for the afternoon snack bag. Also, make a list of healthy substitutions for your most commonly consumed processed foods (having an orange instead of orange juice is one example). Challenge yourself to be just a little bit better. Can you do natural peanut butter instead of regular peanut butter? Or high fiber noodles instead of plain white pasta? Finally, pay attention to your behavior patterns. Are you more likely to eat processed food at certain times or in certain situations? By recognizing a pattern you can work to break this habit.

The Rock Your Diet 21 Day Makeover gets in depth about the havoc processed foods wreak on our body. Plus, you are given a simple, proven, clear cut solution.

ROCK YOUR DIET 21 DAY MAKEOVER

Begins May 6th (Enrollment Ends May 3rd)
$129  SALE! $99

If you're like most people, you were taught the same things growing up that I was: being skinny or fat is largely genetic and success at losing weight is a matter of effort and willpower. I can tell you that is simply not true. No matter your current weight or your background, I am convinced you can upgrade your diet and lose weight with the Rock Your Diet 21 Day Makeover.

I'm not making some lofty, melodramatic promise. This is a science based, real life tested program that is proven successful. This past year has been a rough one for me. After suffering from a serious infection, my body changed dramatically. I continued to exercise and eat the same but suddenly I felt tired all the time. I felt every bit of my 49 years and the weight kept coming on no matter what I did to eat "clean" or exercise. So I decided it was time to re-invent the wheel and became a Certified Nutritionist. This journey taught me about how inflammation and hidden food intolerances dramatically interfere with our ability to lose weight. I was able to shed 14 pounds effortlessly and the Rock Your Diet 21 Day Makeover was born. I feel great, energized and have found that it's not unusual for people to lose between 10 to 15 pounds in 21 days once they realize the roadblocks in the way.

So what is the Rock Your Diet 21 Day Makeover? Quite simply it's an anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, gut healing, weight loss inducing, recovery plan. And it's very specific - it outlines exactly what to eat every meal every day for the entire 21 days, as well as how to carry forward after that. It offers relief from a hidden epidemic of pain and suffering caused by the foods we eat, even the apparently healthy foods. This straightforward nutrition plan is supported by healing recipes so your body finally has the ability to shed pounds. You do not need to meet with me, meet with a personal trainer, or do any workouts to follow this plan (although I do think exercise is a good idea!). It is completely self-guided and delivered to you via pdf's in your email inbox. There are even recipes for vegetarians and vegans!

The Rock Your Diet 21 Day Makeover is going to show you how certain healthy foods sabotage your weight loss effort, energy levels, skin, sleep, mood and your overall sense of well-being. Each of the 21 days will focus on utilizing anti-inflammatory nutrition principles to heal your gut and re-train your taste buds to make sugar cravings a thing of the past. You will learn how to smoothly implement lifestyle behaviors that will optimize hormone, metabolic and immune function automatically. You will learn how to build a healthy plate that gets you the results you desire and still leaves you feeling satisfied. You will experience appropriate meal spacing to allow for a stabilization of blood sugar and your liver to begin to burn body fat optimally in a plan that is sustainable for life.

How do you know if any of this applies to you? Remember all health begins in the gut. Rock Your Diet will rock your world if any of these sound familiar to you:

OVAC OFFERS PRE AND POSTNATAL EXERCISE COACHING

Becoming mom is such a special time, so much joy but also confusion and worry when it comes to our bodies. Expecting moms have concerns and questions like:
Can I keep running while pregnant?
What can I do about gestational diabetes?
I wasn’t exercising prior to pregnancy, can I start now?
What types of exercises should I be doing?

There is a lot of advice on the internet and from our friends who have already had children but often this advice isn't grounded in science or research. That's why OVAC is honored to have on staff two expert certified personal trainers who hold advanced level training and certifications specifically in pre and post-natal exercise. Both Sarah Sidote-Ortiz and Erin Foley have been extensively trained in the most recent evidence-based research in this field. Their background includes knowledge of nutrition, exercise, rest and recovery for pre and post-natal women, as well as the ability to help women understand the changes they are experiencing both physically and psychologically during pregnancy and beyond. Sarah and Erin are able to create exercise programs that are safe, effective and specifically designed with a pre and post-natal woman in mind, no matter what level you are at.

Being pregnant is a special time with physical demands (growing a baby!) while still trying to handle the rest of life. And after the baby is born it is incredible all that a new mother goes through physically in a day- bending over while placing a sleeping baby in a crib, running and playing with small children, carrying a child (or two!), juggling all the normal day to day tasks. Both Sarah and Erin are moms and they know 100% what you should expect on your journey and how you can best take care of yourself and your unborn baby. Self-care is the only way you will be ready to truly care for the rest of your family to the best of your ability.

Being a mom doesn’t mean you need to give up on your health, your exercise or your well-being. To let Sarah or Erin help both you and your growing baby, simply call to schedule your first complimentary session. You and your baby deserve the best.
