CLUB UPDATE
I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday Season! We have been cruising along here at the club. The tennis Turkey Trot was a blast with 24 awesome players showing up to battle for the turkey. It was also great to get to play on our three new courts. They look amazing and hope everyone gets a chance to play on them. We are still working on getting new pool furniture shipped here soon. Major shipping delays have become an issue but we hope to get them sooner than later.
I also hope everyone tries a Massage session with Georgia in the near future. If you are feeling the stress, give Georgia an hour of your time and experience our new service. I have heard nothing but great things!
Elin and her great aquatics team had another fun and competitive swim meet last month. It was great having so many juniors working hard in the pool. I'm so proud of our program and how well the juniors have developed.
I hope everyone has a great Holiday Season. I know I am so thankful and I hope you are too!
See Ya at the Club!

BENCH PRESS PRO TIP
Fitness Director Danielle Wommack
A good old-fashioned Band Pull-Apart is a great primer exercise for the Bench Press or any training that involves muscles on the front side of your body. When you perform multiple sets of between 10-20 repetitions, the Band Pull-Apart becomes a corrective movement that activates the muscles attached to the shoulder girdle so that it can move pain free and support pressing movements like the Bench Press.
Why is the Band Pull-Apart so effective? It teaches the shoulders to move in the opposite direction to that which they are in most often – rounded forward. This becomes a habitual posture and as a result it changes the stabilizing muscles in our shoulder muscles and muscles that stabilize the scapula. Over time these muscles become functionally shortened and weakened which leaves you at risk for injury when it comes to lifts like the Bench Press. The Band Pull-Apart is your tool to teach your body how to eliminate this poor posture. It teaches your body how to move the shoulder and scapula to move correctly while training the thoracic spine how to maintain a neutral position for pain free Bench Pressing.
To perform a Band Pull Apart:
- Stand with your feet shoulder width apart
- Keep a resistance band held out in front of your chest with both hands at arm's length
- Maintain the band at chest level and your arms shoulder with apart
- Pull the band apart, moving your hands and straight arms horizontally as you pull that band apart
- Keep the band at chest height throughout the movement and return your hands to the start position after stretching the band to full extent.
Here's a video demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az_VEgEqjXQ
Give Band Pull-Aparts a go before your next Bench Press session and your shoulders and back will thank you.
DECEMBER RACQUETS NEWS
NEW COURTS!
The court improvements on 6, 7 and 8 are complete!! Thanks to all for your patience and cooperation.
VCJTA TOURNAMENT WAS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
We had nearly 70 area kids ages 7-16 come out on the weekend of November 13 and 14 to play our VCJTA open/novice tournament. It was a toasty weekend but the kids had a blast. Several of our members did very well and took home trophies.
The boys 14 Novice Division saw two OVAC clinic regulars Gregory Davis and Nicholas Saucedo face off in the final after each had won their respective division of round robin play. Nicholas was "playing up" a division at 12 years old and obviously did well to make the final. Gregory defeated his buddy in the match tiebreak to take first and they enjoyed a celebratory cheeseburger after the match.
The girls 14 novice division featured a similar scenario with our own Cassidy Gaston defeating her friend and fellow member Mary Moses after each had advanced through round robin play to make the final.
In the Boys 12 Open Sebastian Saucedo finished as runner-up. He got to have a cheeseburger too! The Girls 12 Open division OVAC's own Rania Busz proved too strong for her opponent and trounced her 6-0;6-0 in the final to take first place. A good looking group in the Boy's 10 Novice closed down the tourney late Sunday afternoon.

TURKEY TROT 2021
Twenty-four members and a few guests made for another memorable turkey trot on a gorgeous Saturday in late November. Katya Welborn and her partner Graham eked out a win in a tiebreaker over Lea/David Gonzalez after both teams had finished round robin play tied. Thanks to all who came out to play.
