I hope everyone is having a great start to the summer. It has been a tough one for the OVAC family as we lost our dear friend and Tennis Director, Thomas Brinkhoff. He was an amazing pro and friend to all of us who had the pleasure to know him. As we move forward we are still having our great summer tennis camps and will announce our new Tennis Director in the very near future. I have had the pleasure of running the first two camps and it was great getting back on the courts and hitting with such amazing juniors! As I type this update we are having our first big summer party of the season. I can't wait to have The Diane Miller Band play Friday Night along with a cool climbing wall for the kids! I hope everyone has an amazing July. Come by the club for some pool time and food at the cafe!!

TENNIS NEWS
PLEASE WELCOME OVAC NEW TENNIS DIRECTOR STEVE BECKENDORF!!
We are very excited to announce our new Tennis Director, Steve Beckendorf to the Ojai Valley Athletic Club! PTR certified, Steve has been in and around the sport of tennis his entire life. From his beginnings in Minnesota as a 3-time State High School champion and top ranked junior to his Division III college career at Gustavus Adolphus College, he has always had a passion for the game. He continues to play National Level age-group tournaments when his busy teaching schedule permits.
Steve teaches clinics, private and group lessons for both adults and juniors and thoroughly enjoys helping his students take the steps they need to improve their game. He was previously a coach for the Central Coast USTA Competition Training Center working with ranked juniors. Steve was also a former head pro at the River Ridge Tennis Center and Oxnard Tennis Center and a member of the Babolat National Advisory Staff.
Steve will bring an amazing amount of energy and professionalism to the tennis program. I hope everyone gets to meet Steve in the near future. If you are interested in lessons or clinics this summer with Steve please contact him at 805-746-0819.

QUIN SEIDER COMPETES AT JAG'S
Quin Sieder, the Ojai Heat Waves only swimmer who qualified for Junior Age Group Invitational in Ventura, competed on June 16th. He earned a 3rd in 100 LCM (Long Course Meters) Free with a 1:02.79 and a 4th in the 50 LCM Free with a 29.15. Way to go Quin!

Tadpoles Level 1- Water Skills and Safety (ages 3-5)
Preschool age beginners start breath holding and blowing bubbles while gaining arm stroke and kicking. Emphasizes water safety while having fun and gaining confidence
Minnows Level 2-Fundamental Aquatic Skills (ages 4-6)
Focus on front and back glide, breathing, freestyle, backstroke. Swimmers gain endurance and stroke skills
Manta- Level 3- Stroke Introduction (ages 5-9) *Swimmers learn improved stroke mechanics and efficiency swimming longer distances, diving and swimming in deep water pre-swim team readiness *must be able to swim 15 yards unassisted and submerge head
TOP YOGA POSES FOR SWIMMERS
Are you looking to enhance your swimming? Practicing yoga can be very beneficial to swimmers of all levels. Yoga is complementary to swimming because it:
- Strengthens your core, shoulders chest and hips
- It improves focus and concentration
- Help establish a maintain breathing pattern
- Improves flexibility
Try some of these poses to benefit you swimming:
Thread the Needle Pose stretches and opens the shoulders, chest, arms, upper back, and neck. It releases the tension that is commonly held in the upper back and between the shoulder blades.
Locust pose: A core and back strengthener builds length and alinement in the body and limbs. Try to hold for 20 seconds, release and repeat.
Forward Fold with Shoulder Opener: A shoulder and hamstring opener. Inhale to rise and exhale to fold to establish a breathing pattern.
RIP THOMAS BRINKHOFF
It is with a sad heart that we inform the OVAC community of the passing of our beloved Tennis Director, Thomas Brinkhoff. Before I became General Manager I was the Tennis Director at OVAC for over 16 years. When I was looking for a replacement I looked no further than my old friend Thomas. We met 18 years ago when he was an instructor for Weil Tennis. He and I, along with others, always had a great time going out and talking tennis. We played in multiple leagues and had tons of fun. Hearing that he was interested in the Tennis Director position I jumped at the chance to have such a great guy and a coach that teaches at such a high level.
He came in with great energy and was a hit with our team. He always walked into the club with a positive, professional attitude. He was willing to help out anyway he could and with a dry, German, sense of humor always made me laugh. Throughout his two years as Director, he developed some great juniors and worked with our amazing ladies. I personally looked forward every week for his "Live Ball" clinic where I got to play tennis and banter back and forth with Thomas as he fired balls at us for an hour.
He will be greatly missed and I am so glad that we got to have him in the OVAC family. Thomas leaves behind 3 kids (Maddie, Charly, and Max) and wife Angela. If you would like to donate to the Brinkhoff family please go to the following page:

WHAT ARE SUPERSETS?

Quite simply, supersets are the back-to-back performance of two exercises of opposing muscle groups with little or no rest in between. Supersets are used to shoot up your hormone response while still saving time in your workout. Supersets ramp up the metabolic stress while saving time in the form of shorter rest periods.
But, what's the best ordering of exercises in a superset? One tip is to do you pulls before your pushes. Yes, we all love the bench press, but keep in mind that doing pulls first (like a row), before pushes (like a bench press) will actually enhance the performance of the push. Why? Because you will activate stabilizing muscles in your shoulder blade area that will then use a phenomenon called "reciprocal inhibition" and will create more dynamic stability for those the subsequent push exercise.
