CLUB NEWS

Things are really happening here at OVAC over the past month! It has been amazing to see so many members come back to the club after getting their vaccinations! It has also been exciting to see so many new families join the club. With less restrictions we have also been able to have a couple of fun events. Our Wine and Paint night was tons of fun and so nice to see people outside having a great time.

We are gearing up for an exciting Summer! We will have lifeguards again along with fun camps and clinics for tennis and aquatics. Please check out our website to get the latest information and registration information.

We have gotten questions regarding when certain things are going to reopen. If all goes according to plan and we drop the tier system June 15th, we will open Childcare and the Sauna for the members. We should also be bringing back towels in the near future.

We are excited for May and hope to see everyone soon!

See Ya at the Club!

Ryan

THE MAGIC BEHIND PILATES EQUIPMENT

By Pilates Director Georgia Cotsis

"No man - no machine can correct or create vitality, power, or health for you; everything comes from within, you have to unfold it." - Joseph Pilates

I love this quote from Joseph Pilates because it introduces the fact that when it comes to Pilates equipment…we do not use it in a way to convince anyone that that specifically is what is going to fix the body. What I mean by this is, the equipment is made in a genius way where it is only assisting you to help understand the exercise and help guide the body. YOU are the one doing everything else! There is typically not a lot of weight added during an exercise for that reason, which actually leads to most movements being more challenging over time than you would expect because then it is more reliant on your muscles alone and your memory of the movement.

When you look at the equipment, keep in mind that it is more than just straps and springs, it carries the body in a way of showing its potential. The equipment is here for private sessions only. Sign up today! Time slots are going fast!

EXERCISE AND YOUR MONTHLY CYCLE

 img

-Danielle Wommack, Fitness Director

Every woman has a different experience with her cycle, but experts do offer guidance on when to take it easy and when to go hard with your exercise to help manage each stage of your cycle based on what is happening with your hormones. And remember that the type of workout you do won't matter as much as the intensity. Let's break it down week by week.

Week 1 (Days 3 – 9): The Ramp Up (Increased Load or Intensity). Week 1 occurs in the first half of your follicular phase. During this time, you can increase the intensity of your training and start lifting heavy. Think of it as a week to "prime" yourself for maximum load and intensity. This is a great time to do interval workouts. Be sure to include a sufficient warm-up, as you're coming off a down week.
Week 2 (Days 10 – 16): High Load or Intensity. This week is the second half of the follicular phase and rolls right into ovulation. During this time, you may find that your energy is at its peak. To take advantage of this, you can incorporate a few workouts that use max efforts. Now's the time to attempt a PR. Doing shorter, "all-out" effort sprints is great during this time if it is within your ability.
Week 3 (Days 17 – 23): Aerobic Efforts. Right after ovulation comes the first week of the luteal phase. During this time, you may find you do better with aerobic training. Moderate loads and longer, less intense workouts are ideal. Bike rides, trail runs, or circuit-style training are all great options. As you start to move towards the end of this week, taper your training off according to how your body is feeling as you experience PMS symptoms. Be sure to remain hydrated and be mindful of the fact that your core temperature has increased.
Week 4 (Days 24 – 28, 1-2): The Down Week. This phase starts when your PMS symptoms start to become more prominent. During this time, you can do light activities like swimming, easy biking, yoga, or simply rest . When your period starts, continue to rest. Once it tapers off, start back with the ramp up.

OJAI HEATWAVES LIGHT IT UP AT USA SWIMMING MEET

img

By Wenke Seider-Head Coach

On March 21 and on April 18, the Ojai Heatwaves returned to their first USA Swimming Sanctioned Swim Meets at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center since the Pandemic forced a 13-month break from competition. The meet format was unique in that each of the 12 teams participating from the Coastal Section (Santa Maria to Malibu) swam in their own separate 2-hour block of time, to be compliant with state and local COVID-19 requirements. The host team, Canyons Aquatics, provided USA Swimming Officials and an electronic timing system.
The 17 Heatwaves athletes did not take the opportunity for granted and achieved an amazing average of 90% best times at the meet. Having had the opportunity to continue training at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club (in a limited capacity) over the past challenging year allowed the athletes to maintain their conditioning, as well as strengthen their bonds with one another through invaluable social interaction.
With their sights set on qualifying for the two highest level age group swimming meets of the summer in Southern California (June Age Group Invite and Southern California Junior Olympics), the Heatwaves swimmers are looking forward to more meets in the near future.

Two of the Heatwaves swimmers, Amelie Pinkernell and Quin Seider, are embarking on their high school swim careers this year, as Nordhoff Freshman, along with returning Sophomore, Tayten Neiderhiser. The club swimmers are sure to bring an added level of excitement to the Nordhoff Rangers Swim Team's longstanding tradition of excellence. Keep an eye out for the high school meet schedule which kicked off on April 14th.
